Need Filtration advice for 300 gal tank for rays
« on: November 02, 2009, 10:52:59 AM »
I currently have a 300 gal (8x30x24) and i'm running 2 FX5's and a 20 gal wet/dry that came with the tank when i bought it.. I've been told a couple times recently that i don't have enough filtration for rays.. Can someone please help me out and tell me what the "IDEAL" filtration setup would be.. I thought i'd be good with the 2 canisters and the wet/dry running over 1200gph but i must have been wrong..
The current stock is:
4 rays between 8-12"
4 severums(4")
2 blue acara(3-4")
1 festae..(5")

Wow.. You would think that would handle it, huh?  It is true though, you are looking at a really heavy load even for that size tank, 4 rays can put off alot of waste especially as they grow.   Make sure your filters are stacked with biomedia, obviously.. Also, look into what kind of substrate and decorations you might be using because fine sand and driftwood creates alot of surface area for nitrifying bacteria.   The "IDEAL" would be to use your current configuration just upgrading the size of the wet dry to host a ton more bio-media, GPH rate, and water volume..

Glad to see you around :)

Thanks for the help.. Well i'm pretty sure i  found my new set up i'm going to run.. I'm going with 2 40 gal tubs,  both with  filter socks on each tub, then i just bought 10 gallons of ceramic rings, and that's not including what's in my 2 FX5's now which are filled with bio max too.. Then i'll be running 2 Quiet one pumps doing 1017gph each.. I'm going to sell one FX5 and then keep the other one running on the 300, so i'll have around 3000gph in all. So does that sound good??? Let me know any other advice you got for me..

IMO you have enough filtration for the rays, but could always use more.  The biggest thing is feed portions, because if you feed LARGE amounts infrequently your nitrifying bacteria won't be able to handle all of it at once.  Ive had great success with feeding small quantities over multiple feedings as to not create an ammonia spike.  If you get cloudy water or any traces of ammonia, obviously you will need some more filtration.  As those rays get larger, you might want to up it a little more.. Another FX5 wouldn't hurt, but I would say that wet/dry filters out alot more than people would think..
