beginer's question
« on: April 19, 2009, 09:22:39 AM »
1.Why males have a red spot in the middle of ventral surface?

2.It is said that stingray should be well fed, but still i can't figure out the exact quantities
consider blood worms and earth worms as a primary diet ,three times a day.

3.I'm very interested to hear about  husbandry and mostly personall experiance with rays from Paratrygon and Plesiotrygon generas ,especialy about black tailed antena rays.

1. do you have a picture of this red spot?

2. Blood worms and earth worms are not the best thing to have a ray on for life, bloodworms dont have much nutritional value but are good to get a freshly imported ray eating. Earthworms are better because they have a high fat content. But getting them of market shrimp and silversides or pellets would be your ultimate goal

The spot is normal I've seen it on both males and female rays. As for quantity, it depends on the size of the ray. It's appetite will grow as the ray grows. You'll learn how much as you get to know your ray better.

You know I have noticed this as well on a few of my rays. It isn't where the egg sac hangs from is it because I have seen the sac hang much lower than there.

As a matter of fact that is exactly where they absorb their egg sac.

wow, i was completely unaware that they have egg sac
so it's kind of a belly button ::)
any suggestions why some of them don't have such pigmentation, and also how long it takes to newborns to absorb their egg sac ?

Yeah its been said that the egg/yolk sac leaves a birth mark, and thats why some rays get a brown spot on their belly.  Some rays don't.. kinda like an innie and an outtie?

Feeding is always taboo.. a good varied diet, 3x daily, is really a good feeding schedule.  Stay away from a single food, especially fatty seafoods.  The more variety the better, and dont feed your rays until they are so stuffed they keep eating.  They should still be slightly hungry after each meal.  No hips, bones, or veins showing around the disc, means you have a healthy ray!

First thing to be aware of is if it is a Legit Menchacai or not.

I think you should start a separate thread for this :D
